What do you use?

I am beginning to love thread as much as I love fabric, and since I'm still so new to all this maybe it's just a phase that will pass.

When I first started quilting I knew very little about just what was out there for me to use, and still while I love all the colours, I don't know a lot of the merits of different brands, blends, etc.

What do I use? 100% cotton for pieceing as well as for my quilting. Is that right? I don't know, it's more expensive than the poly, but does poly work just as well? Or does it matter for pieceing at all?

I would love to know what your take is on this? What do you use and why? What is your favourite brand and why? And if you want to throw out the colour you love most, I'll take that too! Thanks everyone.

Elizabeth at Oh Fransson has some tips about the thread she uses. I'm new to all this myself so I'm learning right along with you and her quilts are gorgeous so I'll most likely use her tips. I'm posting the link to her page. If it doesn't work, you can just check Oh Fransson.com and under the how to section she talks about what she quilts with.

I use 100% cotton for everything. And Mettler makes a really good thread. Gutterman is good too.

I am no expert but I'm a Gutterman girl whenever I can be. The trouble with the cotton threads is the colour variety is less. But the quality is worth the little tiny bit you pay extra.

Hey, girl! I'm a gutterman gal too. I used to feel snobbish about using only 100% cotton on all my quilts, but when I was using my clunker machine, the cotton thread would break all the time. I found that poly comes in so many more colors and it's slightly stronger, especially for free-motion. :)

Congrats on the pregnancy and thanks for saying hi! I use Glutterman polyester for everything. It doesn't gum up my machine like cheaper stuff does, and I prefer the look of the quilting with polyester over cotton. The cotton thread is just way to thick and doesn't blend as nicely. But that's just me!

I piece with Aurifil. I quilt with Superior's SoFine and BottomLine. I like thin thread plus my Nolting longarm loves it.

I use a 100% cotton thread called Essential from Connecting threads. It is 50 weight which is a finer thread. I use it for piecing by machine and hand also machine quilting. It is long Egyptian cotton with a satin finish. I have a lot of colors and the great thing about it is it is a great price. The site is www.connectingthreads.com. Most of the time I have to order. I advise people to use the best they can afford. If it isn't an heirloom quilt then use what you have or can get in your area. My problem is they have closed all the stores and ordering has become my only source for threads and supplies. Chris
